The Tyneside Cinema - no nachos allowed

Not impressed by this summers over-hyped blockbusters? Fed up with all 240 screens at your local multiplex showing the same three films? Sick of being stuck next to annoying people who think that nachos and hot dogs are acceptable cinema fodder?
We may have the answer…
The Tyneside cinema reopened in May after a year and a half over in Gateshead while the original cinema received a £6.5 million makeover. The venue is one of Newcastle’s most loved hidden gems but its not really that far off the beaten track.
Keep walking straight down Northumberland Street across to Pilgrim Street and you’ll soon see the Tyneside, although the entrance itself is cleverly concealed down a side street.
As well as boasting more independent and foreign films than your multiplex shows in a decade, the Tyneside also shows some of the bigger films going. In fact the first film shown at the reopening was the new Indiana Jones movie, and they’re also planning to show the much anticipated Batman sequel The Dark Knight.
But the best thing about going to the Tyneside is that it succeeds in making going to the cinema the big event it should be. The plush surroundings and art deco style of the classic cinema make the whole experience enjoyable, and if you’ve got the extra cash to shell out on the classic circle seats its well worth it.
With a private bar and sofas to lounge on as you watch your film, this must be the proper way to do cinema. And the cherry on the cake? Proper cinema food only. We’ve never loved a place more.

The only proper cinema food is a choc ice bought from someone with a lit tray at the interval between the two movies that are being shown on a double bill. Popcorn is the invention of the devil. (Nachos are infinitely preferable to popcorn)
