PREVIEW - Angel Weekend at the Tyneside Cinema

By Paul Smith • Jun 12th, 2008 • Category: events

When the Angel of the North was first unveiled in 1998, Tyneside did little to hide its horror at the rusting eyesore looming above the A1 like the harbinger of death. 10 years later, and the Angel embodies the transformation of the region that followed and more importantly, always tells you you’re nearly home when you spot it from the train or car.

Celebrations for its first decade are set to continue this weekend at the all-new Tyneside Cinema; Angel Weekend is a collection of films celebrating the celestial attendants of God and their relationship with the silver screen.

Spirited Away is a Japanese animated feature, highly celebrated and described by one reviewer as “a magical, awe-inspiring, tearful, laughter-filled, heartfelt journey through a land of sweeping fantasy and dreams.”

The quintessentially English David Niven stars in A Matter Of Life And Death as RAF Squadron Leader Peter Carter, forced to plead with heavenly forces after he is shot down, bail out of his plane with no parachute, survive, and fall in love all in the first moments of the film.

Finally, Wings of Desire is Wim Wenders’ romantic, melancholy, and life-affirming tale about two angels watching over the people of a divided Berlin.
