PREVIEW - the Mayfair Rock Club Reunion, Carling Academy

Back in the day, when all this was just fields, the underground car park of The Gate was the greatest venue in the North East.
From Jerry Lee Lewis, Deep Purple and Clapton through to The Clash, Led Zeppelin, The Sex Pistols, Metallica and Nirvana - every band and artist to influence the genre played at the Mayfair Ballroom, one of the most exciting and important rock venues in the country.
When it was lost to redevelopment (along with The Riverside), there was an unfulfilled void in Newcastle’s music scene, with few venues capable of offering a stage to up-and-coming bands. The crowd dispersed to the likes of Trillians and Cuba Cuba on a Friday night, lamenting at their loss.
Three years ago the Carling Academy opened, providing two venues desperately needed by Newcastle, ensuring tours no longer circumvented the city. So it seems fitting that the Academy is now home to the Mayfair Rock Club Reunion.
The first was in April, the second is tomorrow night (1st August), with former Mayfair DJs playing classic rock anthems throughout the night.
The Rock Club Reunion starts at 10pm; tickets are just £3 from the Carling Academy box office or their website.

It was always a great night at the Mayfair and I was at the last Reunion I would recommend getting now there; ever without the late “Little Jeff” it was worth every beer.
