Silent film night in Heaton Park tonight

For the fourth year running, the Friends of Heaton and Armstrong Parks have planned a silent film night in Heaton Park tonight.
The evening starts at 8.30pm with a short movie for younger audiences. Then from 9pm tonight, the main feature, The Man Who Laughs (1928).
It’s the story of Gwynplaine, who has a permanent smile carved on his face by the King, in revenge for Gwynplaine’s father’s treachery. When the king dies, his evil jester tries to corrupt Gwynplaine.
If the fixed grin and disturbing clown-like appearance sound familiar, the appearance of Gwynplaine was a key inspiration for comic book legends Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson in creating The Joker way back when.
Should the weather stay dry for the evening, then it’s ideal for an evening picnic and a bottle of red.
