SummerTyne Sunday - what’s going on?

It’s festivaltastic in Newcastle and Gateshead right now, and it’s far from over yet.

As the flamboyant Vamos! comes to an end, SummerTyne picks up the batton to deliver a day of music on the banks of the river Tyne.

Caribbean-on-Tyne continues in the Sage’s Performance Square from 2pm, with sounds from Latin lands thrown in. The afternoon gets off to a cracking start with the North East premiere of the newly formed Baghdaddies big band.

The afternoon includes the return of Brazilian singer Monica Vasconcelos – a great hit at the 2008 Gateshead International Jazz Festival, as well as an up-tempo set from the Alex Wilson Salsa Orchestra.

There’s also a ninety minute reggae sequence which features Earl 16, one of the greats of Jamaican music, the superb roots singer and voice of Dreadzone plus Prince Malachi.

In Hall One of the Sage, a Latin spectacular kicks off at 7.30pm. Mayra Andrade was the winner of the 2008 BBC World Music Award in the Newcomer category, and tonight the Cuban-born, Paris-based singer performs with her Brazilian band.

Finally, SummerTyne plays tribute to Bob Marley from 8pm in Hall 2. For information and prices (this afternoon’s performances are free), see the Sage website.
