Tyne bridge set on fire

Ah, the sensationalist headline. The Tyne bridge hasn’t been set on fire, but a bridge over the Tyne will be set on fire. Sort of.
Where are we going with this? To a decent photo opportunity, if you’re so inclined, when the SummerTyne festival kicks off tomorrow.
The bamboo suspension bridge across the river has now been completed. After several weeks of construction, the 25 metre towers on either side of the Tyne are now connected by a cable conduit.
Between the Millennium Eye and the Tyne Bridge, the structure is a little limited as a means for transportation; only those from Australian company Bambuco who constructed the bridge are allowed to tiptoe their way across.
It’s art, you see, rather than a practical means of traversing the Tyne, as you’ll discover tomorrow night.
To mark the launch of the third SummerTyne festival, two riggers will walk the length of the bridge lighting over 700 flames along its length.
It’s scheduled to happen at 10pm; sunset is a little less than half an hour earlier, so if conditions are right then you’ll be witness to hundreds of torches strung out over the Tyne against a twilight background.
