What’s going on at the Tyneside?

Of course you know by now, that the Tyneside Cinema is back and better than ever.
But if you’ve refused to give the newly refurbished picture house the time of day because you despise subtitles and French people in your films, then you’ve got the new Tyneside all wrong.
Art house and independent film still enjoy prominence here, but alongside more commercial endeavours.
Why the blockbuster screenings? Because the more people who pass through the doors, the more people will realise there’s a real alternative to the sticky carpets of the multiplex experience.
This week’s screenings are a great example of the Tyneside’s new approach. There are only three screens, but you can choose from the comic book capers of Hellboy II and frankly interstellar The Dark Knight; critically acclaimed documentaries Man On Wire and Lou Reed’s Berlin; cinematic classics City of Men and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and another four films besides. One of them is French with subtitles. Oh, the horror.
Sorry. We got excited about something as mundane as cinema listings and had to share them. But now that we have, give the Tyneside a whirl. If you hate it, then no harm done. Just head on back to the crowds of brain surgeons who spit gummy bears at your head and get a kick out of shouting BOLLOCKS during the quiet bits.
It’s not about being pretentious, it’s about not wanting to give somebody a bloody good hiding when the lights go up.
For times and prices, see the Tyneside Cinema website.
