Chew on this - The Bridge Hotel

By Caroline ODoherty • Jun 29th, 2008 • Category: food

Tucked neatly behind the castle from which this fair city takes its name, The Bridge Hotel serves up one of the best Sunday lunches you can find. A good old-fashioned Sunday lunch, as good, if not better than your mum could make.

In need of stodge, we ordered the beef Sunday lunch and gazed out at the views of Newcastle’s Quayside and both the Tyne and Swing bridges in all their glory.

If the food was rubbish, we would now be recommending you to pop in to this pub for a drink, because the views at least are fantastic. We can safely say however, the food didn’t even touch the sides.

Sunday lunch is served to you on a round plate straight from the Argos catalogue circa 1998. The chef piles it high; piles of beef (not slices from a pack, but cut from a joint), heaps of mash, a few roasties and everyone’s favourite safe veggies, cabbage and carrot. All garnished with a simple Yorkshire pudding, a cauliflower floret and a River Tyne made of gravy.

You’ll have to get your own condiments, all presented in neat little bowls on a tray at the end of the bar and we shared our salt and pepper with an elderly couple next to us, but it didn’t matter, because this no fuss attitude is the essence of delicious pub grub.

Wash it all down with one of The Bridge’s cask ales, lean back in your chair and rub your tummy like a proud pregnant lady. Result.
