Newcastle shocked by the power (and price) of Kylie

By Paul Smith • Jul 21st, 2008 • Category: music

Kyliemania swept Newcastle last night as the diminutive Princess of Pop TM and her X Tour took to the stage of the Metro Radio Arena for four nights of flamboyance, costume changes and songs you’d never admit to liking publically, but secretly enjoy if you hear them on the radio.

Come on. Shocked and What Do I Have To Do are belters, right? Who’s with me?

Once the crowd stopped bawking at the prospect of paying £15 for a programme - presumably they’re weaved with gold - what followed was a multi-sequined three hour set (with a 15 minute interval for those week of bladder) that mostly justified the eye-watering £45 asking price of the tickets.

The Journal’s Sam Wonfor was blown away by the show and its wardrobe: “Kylie – or the people’s Madonna as I’ve often thought of her – has mastered the art of reinventing herself to suit the mood and didn’t disappoint throughout proceedings.”

“We had elegant Kylie, military-style Kylie, sailor girl Kylie, Copacabana Kylie, cheerleading Kylie, Jodhpur-clad Kylie, Geisha Kylie and rocker Kylie. And all this is to say nothing of the countless styles which flashed on the screens behind.”

Not everyone was as keen, though. On Twitter, @chriswall endured the concert with his family:

@chriswall: Mum has made friends at Kylie concert. Still not seen one teenage boy in 10,000 people.
@chriswall: Out of Kylie now. I should be so lucky to get out of it before I cried (see what I did there)

In the forums, fans were full of praise. “It was absolutely amazing, I want to go again!” cooed tvqueen1905 on Digital Spy. “Some of the tracks have been slightly remixed from the originals which made it even more exciting,” said Glyn 1799. “Look out for the pianist too. I would pay money to see her perform alone - she was amazing.”
