Newcastle jewellery raiders were “Eastern European gang”

By Paul Smith • Aug 27th, 2008 • Category: news

The armed raiders at Berrys Jewellers in Newcastle last week were part of an organised gang that has operated throughout Europe for the past eight years.

Today’s Chronicle reveals the criminals are from Estonia and have been involved in at least 25 raids across the country and abroad, with their first UK raid taking place in London in 2005.

The robbery occurred a week ago, when three hooded men entered the Jewellers at Grey’s Monument shortly after 10 o’clock in the morning.

One of the men pointed a gun at the chest of the shop assistant, while the others smashed glass cases with hammers.

According to an eye-witness, the robbers fled from the jewellers down Grey Street. Nobody was hurt in the raid but Cartier watches worth £130,000 were stolen.

Northumbria Police are liaising with the Serious and Organised Crime Agency and Europol.
