Newcastle news - Fourteen escape Newcastle fire

- Fourteen people escaped a fire at a three-storey house in Elswick this morning. Fire crews were called to the blaze, which broke out in a ground floor bedroom, in Linwood Avenue in the early hours.
- Nearly a thousand people are protesting at plans to pull down the Royal George in Gosforth to build a residential care home on the site.
- A fisherman trawling for prawns in the North Sea ended up netting a 7ft shark by mistake. The porbeagle shark, more often spotted in the sea around Cornwall, was caught about 10 miles off the North Tyneside coast.
- A Gulf War veteran has been reduced to living rough on the streets of South Shields as he desperately waits for a home.
