- Law enforcement in South Tyneside could be overseen by a US-style sheriff if controversial Home Office plans go ahead, according to councillors.

- Fresh protests against Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley are being encouraged by the Newcastle United Supporters Club (NUSC).

- A fan of Jimi Hendrix has launched a website chronicling the rock legend’s various appearances in the region in the mid-1960s, which included performances at the New Cellar Club in South Shields, Newcastle City Hall and a rumoured busking session in Heaton.

- The value of tourism to the North East economy has jumped by 30% in the last five years to be worth almost £4bn annually to the region.
