- A gang of thugs who left a South Tyneside dad severely brain-damaged have been jailed for a total of 29 years.
- After the collapse of XL, rises in taxation and the small matter of everyone having to eat their passports as a result of the credit crunch, research by The Independent on Sunday shows that in August the number of flights at Newcastle Airport dropped by 10 per cent.
- Rioting prisoners at at Castington Young Offenders Institution attacked warders with pool balls and cues leaving three of them needing hospital treatment.
- Metro staff demonstrated at a meeting of the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority claiming that they have been prevented from speaking about potential privatisation of the Metro system.
- A jealous Jarrow woman subjected a teenage love rival to an hour-long ordeal in which she scalded her with hot liquid from a wok.
