Newcastle news - sinking, flying, singing, crying

- The emergency landing by an RAF Tornado at Newcastle Airport may still cause delays today. Flights were diverted to other airports around the country when the jet overshot the runway yesterday evening. Another flight was diverted in the early hours of this morning while the aircraft was recovered. Check the airport website for details if you’re planning to travel today.

- There’s an indie-fest in November at Newcastle’s Carling Academy, now that the Pigeon Detectives have announced their gig on 27th November. They are preceded by The Feeling on the 20th, The Zutons on the 23rd and The McGuffins on the 25th. Guess which one we made up.

- Emergency services at Holy Island must never tire of people attempting to cross from the mainland and end up wading through the North Sea. At least they have the excuse that they’re non-English speaking Spanish tourists. Still, it doesn’t take that long to make the crossing; we’d suggest that if the sea is creeping up on the road, head for the island that’s closest, not furthest.

- The number of homes repossessed by Newcastle-based Northern Rock soared by more than 70% to 3,710 in the past six months despite government pressure on the wider mortgage sector to help people stay in their home.
