Newcastle residents “quite poor right now” shocker

Times, in case you haven’t noticed, are hard. And according to a new survey, Newcastle has got it harder than anywhere else in the country. Brilliant.

The report by uSwitch.com into our disposable income - that handful of shrapnel left in your bank account after all the bills are paid - reckons we have £2,500 less to fritter away than a year ago as the cost of food, fuel and utility bills increased.

Food inflation is up 13.7 per cent, while the cost of unleaded petrol is up 28 per cent. Energy prices are up 61 per cent in the last year. Yikes.

Crawling in at number one in the league of folks with the least money to blow on unnecessary Ikea furniture on a lazy Sunday afternoon - it’s Newcastle with households having an average disposable income of just £4,836 per year.

Then it’s Hull who by comparison are living like kings with £8,448 per year, then Nottingham and Blackpool.

Spare a thought for those households in West London who are somehow getting by with just £41,610 to spend a year on frippery. God knows how they feed the kids.
