Skiiing? Snowboarding? Hit the slopes of Gateshead

The Beijing Olympics has roused the nation into at least considering exercise as a viable alternative to heavy drinking. Now Gateshead Council wants to make the most of this half-hearted wave of semi-euphoria.
Already chosen as a training camp for British athletes in the months up to the 2012 games, the town now plans to go to… er… town on new facilities that would make Gateshead’s international stadium a public sporting attraction.
The council has unveiled plans to build an ice arena for skating and ice hockey, a snow dome for skiing and snowboarding, a links golf course, restaurants and shops - all to be constructed at the current site.
David Napier, the council’s cabinet member for culture, said: “The stadium is already a world-famous athletics venue, and its reputation as a major training facility is growing.
“Our aim now is to capitalise on what we already have here by developing something really special.”
There’s only the small matter of requiring private investment to make it happen, but surely there’s many a local business with a few million to sink into such a venture? Think of the children.

Hmm unusual Gateshead are opting to prepare for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver 2010 or Sochi 2014 rather than the Olympics in London 2012…..
And I seem to have complicated matters further by illustrating the story with a photo of Lego men swimming. Fail.
