The curious incident of the cat and the Newcastle murder case

At some point last Thursday or Friday, a murderer entered the flat of two students living in Croydon Road, just a few hundred metres from Newcastle General Hospital on Westgate Road.
They beat 25 year old Zhen Xing Yang for over an hour as he tried to defend himself, before killing him in a frenzied knife attack. His girlfriend, 25 year old Xi Zhou may have been forced to watch her boyfriend die. She may have been suffocated to muffle her screams before she too was killed.
Whoever killed the couple seemingly found time to kill the couple’s pet cat, hiding the body in a bucket of water under the bathroom sink.
The murderer, or murderers - there may have been more than one - then left the flat, their clothing heavily bloodstained.
These are the details of a case which continues to shock Newcastle, as described by Northumbria Police today, while detectives try and solve the seemingly motiveless murder of two Newcastle students.
“We will work around the clock to catch those responsible,” said Detective Superintendent Steve Wade, who is leading the inquiry.
“We have a very experienced team of detectives working on this case, we have the support of the local community, the area command policing and the people of Newcastle to catch whoever is responsible for this horrendous crime.”
The cat was found submerged in a washing bowl under the sink covered with by a towel, with a pair of kitchen gloves resting on top.
“Officers are keeping an open mind as to the significance of this find. However, one possibility being considered is that the cat has been killed by those responsible for the murders.”
