Latest - Tyneside remains on flood alert
By Paul Smith • Sep 6th, 2008 • Category: news
It’d be fair to say the weather reflects the mood of Tyneside today. And there’s little sign of it improving, so batten down the hatches, should you own any, get the cat in and see what’s on tv tonight. You ain’t going anywhere.
Many rural roads across Northumberland are currently closed, although major routes are also suffering; according to the AA, the A167 is closed at two junctions of the A1(M) south of Newcastle and there are lane closures on the A1058 coast road at Wallsend.
Emergency services have been called out to rescue stranded drivers across the region, while flood warnings issued yesterday remain in effect for the river Don in Jarrow, the river Derwent in Swalwell and the river Team in Dunston.
Firefighters in Coalburns, Ravensworth and Cleadon have been attempting to steam rising flood water and issuing sandbags to homes. Meanwhile on Twitter, ramshaw says there are no problems in Felling although minxlj reports up to two feet of water at the junction of Grandstand Road and Great North Road in Gosforth.
Predictably, today’s race meeting at Gosforth Park has been abandoned while championship cricket at Chester-Le-Street has also been cancelled.
An extreme weather warning by the Met Office is still in place, after predicting 60mm of rain on high ground between 9am this morning and 4pm this morning. And then all that water has to find it’s way down from the hills. Don’t expect to be slapping the Ambre Solaire on any time soon, folks.
